If you have had a baby with more severe reflux - what helped?
October 7, 2012 at 8:05 PM

We are being referred to a GI specialist. The last few weeks have been so bad and sad for him (my 8.5 month old son).

He has been on rinitidine (zantac) and now prevacid for almost 3 weeks, and it has not been any better. We had to bring him in because he is wincing in pain when it's time to eat now. He takes a bottle fine but pushes out purees with his tongue and cries because it hurts. Apparently his throat is very red from reflux and they want us to go to a specialist. He's up multiple times a night, every night, he gurgles the stomach acid, he shrugs his shoulders to try to relieve pain etc.

We have done the previously stated drugs and also gripe water.

I hope the specialist can help. I'm curious if anybody had success with a particular drug combonation, or a switch in formulas etc.

There's a forum for reflux. You should join and ask the moms!

That's an awfully late onset for infant reflux. My middle child had it and severe milk protein intolerance. We managed it by my eliminating all dairy from my diet and medicating with prevacid. Zantac was a joke, it did nothing.

Since your child is older and this just started, I wonder if it's not the solids? I would eliminate solids and see of it gets better in a few weeks. The problem with medication is that it just masks the issue without finding the underlying cause.

My ds had reflux but he grew out of it around 3 months old. He was on Zantac and we also kept him sitting after he ate, burped him a lot, and set his matress on an incline.

My son had VERY severe reflux, we saw a lot of specialists to get to the bottom of it. I was nursing and he was getting allergens through my breast milk. I tried cutting just about everything out of my diet and nothing helped. We tried putting him on Nutramigan Formula which is supposed to be good for reflux and he still continued to have the reflux. Finally we put him on Neocate Formula (you order it through the pharmacy). Within 3 weeks his reflux had improved significantly and he started sleeping better at night. Now he is almost 2 and we have narrowed down his allergies. He doesn't suffer from any reflux as long as he doesn't have any of his allergens.

If he is pushing food out of his mouth with his tongue, it sounds like he may not be ready for solids. Did he eat solids before fine and this is a new thing, or has he always pushed them out with his tongue?

IMO I definitely think you should look into possible food intolerances!  DS3 is intolerant to dairy, soy, and eggs and like pp I had to eliminate all three from my diet for his reflux to improve.  He also had other symptoms common with intolerances like mucousy stools and ezcema.  Is your LO experiencing any other problems?

Are you FFing or BFing?  If you're FFing you could try using Nutramigen or Alimentum.  They are partially broken down and most milk intolerant babies do well on them.  However, like pp, some more sensitive babies still can't handle these partial protein chains and end up needing an elemental formula like Neocate.  There are no protein chains for your LO to digest.

I would talk to your dr about making a formula change.

Try elevating his crib with a couple of phone books at the head the incline helps to keep stomach acid in place. There is also something called gaviscon infant(you may have to order it online). Its an excellent antacid it not only neutralises stomach acid like all antacids but it also creates a raft to keep the acid where it belongs. There are also ar formulas out or if need be in his case it would be safe to add rice cerial to bottles
