can you set up a facebook event as viewable ONLY by those you invite?

Yup when you set it up there's an option for invites only -
Yeah, I just did it this morning for my baby shower. When I made it, it had the option there. You can set it to be public, viewable by all your friends, or viewable by invitation only.

Yes there is an option go to privacy settings.
