Flash Mob Mayhem: Violent Groups Of Teens Leave NYC Businesses In Ruins

Thugs With No Regard For Anyone But Themselves Causing Chaos All Over

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Violent, thieving mobs have been making headlines across the country for the past few years, and now they have hit New York City.

And Maurice Dubois reported in this CBS 2 investigation, the teen mobs have left neighborhoods worried as businesses take matters into their own hands.

Judson Bennett, 78, recently ran into a violent group of teens - often described with the once-benign term "flash mob" - as he made his daily trip to buy a newspaper at his favorite news team.

"I'm approaching the newsstand, and then suddenly there is a tremendous force behind me," Bennett said.

Bennett ended up with a broken arm.

"I was taken completely by surprise," he said.

In New York and across the country, the mobs of kids - 20, 30, 40 or more - appear out of nowhere and suddenly charge a newsstand or convenience store.

They ransack, steal and wreak havoc with no consideration for customers, such as Bennett, who get in their way.

"They assemble, they do whatever it is that they're going to do, and then they disassemble in a matter of minutes," said Jon Shane, assistant professor of criminal justice at John Jay College. "By the time somebody recognizes what is happening or is injured, if the police are able to respond, it's slow."

Raj Shmara owns a newsstand at Broadway at 55th Street. Shmara said his newsstand has been targeted seven different times by mobs of teens. During an attack just last week, the kids threw a bottle at an employee who had to be hospitalized.

"They cost me a lot," he said.

The increase in attacks and their violent nature has many people concerned.

"I think it needs to be addressed," said Gale Spitalnik. "It's awful."

"It's disturbing to have that kind of activity happening in New York City," said Greg Lukasiewicz of Nutley, N.J.

"It's against the law," said Edvin Brown of Brooklyn. "They should address the problem [like] they address every other issue."

The man who manages the newsstand where Bennett was injured said it has been attacked four times in just the past few weeks.

"It's hard to earn a living, and then they come here and destroy everything, and then they leave," he said. "It's sad."

As quickly as they arrive, the newsstand victims said, the teens are gone - along with thousands of dollars in goods and damages.

Teens have destroyed the newsstand on 57th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues so many times that the manager has been forced to shut down completely in the afternoon so he doesn't lose any more money.

"All our displays are broken," he said.

When CBS 2 contacted the NYPD about the issue, the Department declined to comment.

Meanwhile, many newsstands have turned to putting in their own surveillance to try and deter the attacks - because they feel left on their own.

"I try to scare them, ‘Look, I'm going to take your photo,' and some kids they run," a newsstand owner said.

Shop owners in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn said similar problems there stopped when plainclothes police officers were assigned to the area.

First, I would like to see links to those discussions.

Second, what am I missing? Where were you getting that these crimes are all being perpetrated by non-whites?

(a spreadsheet format, for those who are interested)

    http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/08/02/media-covers-up-violence-of-flash-mobs/

    Excerpt:

The videos with the multi-media comments attached by witnesses to the flash mobs make it clear that the flash mob participants are more often than not of one race and that they are attacking people of another race - often suggested by the locations chosen for the mob attacks.

Though not exclusively, the attacks are quite often young African-American teens attacking non-African-American people. The media purposefully and blatantly omits the obvious racial part of these stories. There is absolutely no benefit to society when the media stops short of calling a flash mob attack the race riot it is.

Cities and other communities need to quit watering-down these stories and deleting disturbing details because it equates to lying to the public. Race rioting is going on again in the United States as it has in decades past, and the public at-large needs to be informed of it. Protecting a community's image or a segment of society's image should not override the public's need to know and need to be protected.

The media, the politicians, and the bulk of the commentators on social issues need to quit being afraid of people like the Rev. Al Sharpton on the left and Rush Limbaugh on the right. They need to be unconcerned if they are going to make a place look as bad as it is. They need to be unconcerned if they are going to make a group of people engaged in a flash mob attack look as bad as their actions are. If a story is about race, it must be reported as a racial story for the good of the people who could easily be subjected to the next flash mob attack.

     http://www.wnd.com/2011/08/329513/

     Excerpt:

Everybody knows that not all black teens attack in flash mobs. There is no one in a position of prominence in society who would say or mean that. When someone says "Black teens have been attacking in flash mobs," we should know what they mean - that the people who attack in flash mobs have been black.

Nonetheless, in articles and radio interviews, I've pointed out the simple fact that black teens have been attacking in flash mobs. A common response to my factual observation is that "Not all blacks are that way," or "You can't generalize." But I've never stated or implied that all blacks are that way, or made any generalizations. Our conversation about race is stuck in this bizarre cycle where someone makes an observation about group behavior, and the only response from many people is a cliché like "Don't judge entire groups." It's as if the plain meaning of words becomes clouded when we pass into the forbidden topic of race. Many are playing word games to evade the stark facts about racial mob violence.

While the shooting death of a young gay man named Lawrence King makes the cover of Newsweek magazine, an equally harmful type of hateful violence has been underreported. Anna Taylor, Emily Guendelsberger and Thomas Fitzgerald of Philadelphia all suffered in separate, violent "flash mob" attacks, committed by blacks. The details of their attacks are shocking; the trend is to pick a random pedestrian, punch them and then kick them brutally while they are down. Whether it's the shooting death of Andrew Graham in Denver, or a young white lady named Shaina Perry being taunted and beaten in Milwaukee, or Carter Strange having his skull fractured in Columbia, S.C., or Dawid Strucinski beaten into a coma in Bayonne, the facts are clear: There is a trend of black teens in groups randomly attacking innocent people, usually non-black people. It's not about robbery; sometimes these attacks are just vicious "games" like the "knock out game" that took the life of 72-year-old Hoang Nguyen in St. Louis. The victims of these attacks, nationwide, are generally non-black, and the attackers are invariably black. What we are seeing is a social problem with a racial element, and it needs to be addressed.

It is undeniable, based on reporting from even liberal news sources, that the people who attack in violent flash mobs are almost exclusively black teens.

this was definitely an interesting read.  Dar is your nomme de plume Flaherty?

Why conservatives obsess over flash mobs and “race riots”

How and why the right suddenly became very, very frightened of black people

We get a lot of unsolicited batshit racist email here at Salon HQ, as pretty much all media outlets do, but this one — which went to just about everyone on staff in one form or another — was a good example of not really crafting a message that will convince or appeal to your chosen audience:

    Hi Alex,

Thomas Sowell says he did not know how bad racial violence really was until he read “White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence to America and How the Media Ignore It.

    From today’s National Review:

“Reading Colin Flaherty’s book made painfully clear to me that the magnitude of this problem is greater than I had discovered from my own research. He documents both the race riots and the media and political evasions in dozens of cities across America.”

A good recent example of this is from a few weeks ago: The Fourth of July.

Flaherty documents 11 episodes of racial violence from the Fourth of July in Greensboro, Philadelphia, Chicago, Waco, Florida, Georgia, Peoria, Los Angeles, Cleveland and Columbus.

All in one day. There’a a lot more.

    Sound like a story?

(That was an email from “Dan Auld.” An identical email from “Margie Warren” was sent to our Laura Miller. Let’s assume both are Colin Flaherty.)

Anyway, sure, it sounds like a story, but not quite the story “Dan” pitched. (Eleven incidents in one day! On one day when nearly everyone in America didn’t have to work or attend school! Eleven separate incidents in a country of 300 million people!) It’s actually the story of how and why the right suddenly became very, very frightened of black people.

So, this Flaherty guy is pretty sure that there’s a black crime wave going on, and also that there is a conspiracy — by the media and the police — to cover up this crime wave by not always pointing out when the perpetrators of crimes are black. His evidence? YouTube clips and newspaper comment sections, mostly. The book seems to be a collection of literally every single crime Flaherty could find, over the last few years, involving black perpetrators and white victims (though some involve incidents where the victims were black, and in many incidents the “victim” was property owned by white people), plus a lot of material on roving, rampaging gangs of black teenagers. Exciting stuff! Look, Thomas Sowell loved it, because it shows how dangerously close we are to an actual racial civil war:

In the middle of the 20th century, Sri Lanka had a level of mutual respect and even friendship between its majority and minority communities that was rightly held up to the world as a model. Yet this situation degenerated over the years into polarization and violence that escalated into a civil war that lasted for decades, with unspeakable atrocities on both sides.

All it took were clever demagogues and gullible followers. We already have both. What it will take to nip in the bud the small but widely spreading race riots will be some serious leadership in many quarters and that rarest of all things in politics, honesty.

Race hustlers and mob inciters like Al Sharpton represent such polarizing forces in America today. Yet Sharpton has become a White House adviser, and Attorney General Eric Holder has been photographed literally embracing him.

I’ve never been entirely clear on the definition of the right-wing epithet “race hustler” (it usually seems to mean “a black person who talks about racism”), but I’d figure a person writing a silly book designed solely to scare white people would qualify.

So here’s the thing: If you look for every example of crimes committed by black people in every American city over the last three to five years, you’ll find enough examples to make it sound like a lot of crime, because America is a violent country with a lot of crime, a lot of poverty and a lot of impoverished minority neighborhoods located conveniently close to much wealthier white neighborhoods (and business districts where everything is also owned by white people).

But this epidemic of racial crime isn’t an epidemic. It’s barely a blip. According to the FBI, there were 575 crimes motivated by anti-white bias in 2010, nationwide. There were 545 anti-white crimes in 2009 and 716 in 2008. There were more than 2,000 crimes motivated by anti-black bias in each one of those years. Of course, the book insinuates that all black-on-white crime is racially motivated, but even by that standard things are looking pretty rosy in America right now.

The violent crime rate has been plummeting since its peak in the early 1990s, which now looks like the crest of one of America’s periodic (and slightly mysterious) waves of violent crime. (In the long term, the homicide rate has been steadily falling for hundreds of years. We are genuinely much more civilized now than we used to be.) Back when this country actually had race riots, and not just large gangs of kids briefly fighting and scaring white people on summer nights, there were … actual race riots, motivated by racial tensions. It’s absurd to imagine a secret pandemic of black-on-white violence motivated by anti-white racism that the media and all of our law enforcement agencies conspire to keep secret for reasons of political correctness. There would have to be hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of crimes that no one is reporting in order for the current violent crime rate to come close to matching what it was a generation ago. There can’t be an epidemic of black crime that coincides with the least amount of total crime in America since the 1960s.

The point, of course, isn’t to make an argument supported by statistics. It’s to marshal all available anecdotal data to support the paranoid white conservatives’ gut feeling that this country is on the brink of Charlie Manson’s Helter Skelter.

(Sometimes the need to prove the wanton criminality of blacks leads right-wing outlets to have to pretend to care about other frequently marginalized groups. But it’s a bit difficult for World Net Daily, whose editors put distracting and hilarious scare quotes around every example of the word “gay” in Flaherty’s column on black-on-gay violence.)

“Flash mobs” are reported on extensively, because they’re novel and can be used to stoke fears of young people and the Internet. The media, of course, have absolutely no clue what they’re reporting on. The press always claims (probably based on police statements) that teens are summoned “on Twitter” or “with social media” for the purposes of spreading chaos; in Philadelphia, at least, more than one “mob” was actually a crowd of people attempting to see a dance crew. Other “mobs” are parties that get out of hand. Which is a thing that’s been happening as long as there have been parties. Of course some of the mobs are genuinely mobs of youths looking to wreck and steal shit — this has been going on since America invented teenagers and gave many of them no legitimate means of access to privileged society and no constructive outlets for their aggressive tendencies. (Regardless of creed or color, teenagers are basically sociopaths and should be avoided at all costs.)

In addition to having decided to make racial fear-mongering his profession, Flaherty’s also a sloppy aggregator. He gets wrong the simple details of the stories he’s abusing to make his argument, and he also seems to invent facts from thin air. Some examples from his column on a series of random incidents in Minneapolis, which became a chapter of his silly book: A woman who was badly beaten by a group of teenage girls is said to have been attacked by “a gang of 20 black women.” The number of attackers appears nowhere in the linked story. (He also seems to intentionally elide the stated motive for the attack, which wasn’t anti-white animus but a missing pair of sunglasses.) “In September of 2011, a crowd of 1,000 black people rioted through downtown fighting, stealing, destroying property,” he writes. There’s no way of knowing how many people were in the crowd, but it doesn’t look to me like 1,000. In the book he seems to have changed number to 800, though he still has no possible way of counting. (The person who uploaded video of the crowd’s brief marauding wrote of “a few hundred.”) Flaherty says “a group of black people attacked a mobile alcoholic beverage cart in Minneapolis,” but there’s no such thing as “mobile alcoholic beverage carts” in Minneapolis. The thing attacked was a bunch of people on one of those stupid group bicycles with a beer keg. This is all pretty basic stuff, and my folks always taught me that if you’re going to use a bunch of random incidents to try to convince people of the existence of a secret nationwide pandemic of racial violence, it’s best to get the details right.

This belief in an epidemic of black-on-white crime that the press and law enforcement conspire to keep secret is an old one, and crazies have been sending newspapers mimeographed manifestos on the subject for years. It’s a common topic of discussion at white supremacist message boards and in the comments sections of newspapers, which are often indistinguishable from white supremacist newsletters. It was the sort of crap Ron Paul’s famous newsletters would cover, back when he was trying to win the “rednecks” over to the libertarian cause. The sort of people who obsess over this shit are of course older, white and likely already terrified of America’s urban areas and black neighborhoods. They are also sort of hilarious, in a creepy way: Their primary argument is that they are and you should be constantly petrified, and yet they also think that they are Tough Realists. Here’s a telling passage from a review of Flaherty’s book:

I live not very far from The Loop in St. Louis, site of several recent “Flash Mob” incidents in which whites were indiscriminately attacked by mobs of “disaffected teens.” Thanks to HB218, I can – and do – legally go armed anywhere in the U.S. (except on airplanes and such). But despite this advantage, knowing what’s been occurring on The Loop, I would not go there, especially at night, unless I had a light infantry company with me. A pistol is fine against a handful of attackers … but dozens? Hundreds? Then there’s the beef you’d have with the authorities for popping some miscreant, especially a black one. Sorry, Loop. You ain’t worth the trouble.

In other words, we have a bunch of pants-shitting cowards who think (and sometimes arm themselves like) they’re Dirty Harry.

What’s changed since the days when Ron Paul was profiting from fear-mongering is that as soon as Barack Obama was inaugurated, this gutter-right meme started popping up in the conservative mainstream. This is largely thanks to the shamelessness of Matt Drudge, whose Drudge Report semi-regularly becomes a clearinghouse for every single example of violence committed by young black people than he can find. From Drudge, the obsession with scary black people moved to Rush Limbaugh, who connected it directly to Obama. It’s now a common trope at the Daily Caller, on “The O’Reilly Factor” and in the syndicated columns of (black) conservative “scholar” Thomas Sowell.

“White Girl Bleed a Lot” is a dumb, self-published book by a guy no one’s ever heard of, but he’s made himself an expert on one of the right wing’s favorite, and currently most useful, myths. With people like Sowell promoting him, Flaherty might soon find himself moving up in the right-wing media world. Unless a flash mob gets to him, obviously.

Let’s begin with what inspired you to write this book.

    Flaherty: Thanks Jamie.

My brother and I were doing a talk radio show in WDEL Wilmington, Delaware when I read a story about something called a flash mob on the streets of Philadelphia.  This was two years ago. Then it happened again and again. Finally I looked at it on YouTube, and the violence and mayhem I saw on video was totally different than the antiseptic account I read in the newspapers in Philadelphia.  Everyone involved was black. So I asked a few reporters: “What’s up with this race riot in Philadelphia?” They said it was not a race riot and I was imagining things. “Did you see the videos?” I asked. “Well, everyone is black but race has nothing to do with it.”

The riots kept happening, in Philadelphia and elsewhere. I kept asking people what was going on. They kept denying anything was going on.

So I decided I would write a book for the people who denied the reality of this horrific racial violence and mayhem.  And that was it: No explanations. No solutions. No apologies. Just that these things are happening all over the country and it cannot be good that so many people are so aggressively denying it.

FP: So what did you discover while writing the book?

Flaherty: I found out almost right away that there are two problems: One, racial violence; and two, liberal reporters and public officials who condone, explain, and even lie about it. I realized the problem was much worse than I, or anyone else thought.

FP: Give us an example of the lies.

Flaherty: Sure, Chicago. Memorial Day 2011. Chicago had been the site of a series of black mob attacks in all different parts of the city. In the downtown, the gay area, the public transportation, and the beaches, to name a few. So during the Memorial Day holiday in 2011, hundreds and hundreds of black people descended on North Avenue Beach and starting beating up people, knocking them off their bikes, wreaking havoc.  The next day, the city closed the beach. They said they did it, not because of the mob violence — they denied mob violence even took place there. They said they closed it because  it was too hot. A local radio station got the 911 calls, and people who were there called the station, and that showed that the beach was the site of a big civil disturbance, and the police administrators were not telling the truth about it.

FP: Chicago is in the news a lot this year for violence.  What kind of job are they doing?

Flaherty: I tell people the following story but I do not expect them to believe it. That is why I put a link to it in the book. So the newly appointed Superintendent of Police is at a meeting and is talking about violence in Chicago and what is responsible. He said Sarah Palin.  Just a few weeks ago, he found someone else to blame: The pilgrims. All I can tell you is that I would not have believed it had I not seen it on video. I get a lot of email from police in Chicago. They tell me the same thing others on the front lines all over the country tell me: The situation is very dangerous. And no one knows about it.

FP: How widespread is this problem?

Flaherty: I documented hundreds of examples in more than 70 cities. And here is what happens. I hear about a riot or a mob and I check it out and learn that it was a large group of black people creating havoc. So I write the details. In the course of reporting it, or after the story comes out, I almost always hear: “That’s been happening here a long time.”  But reporters are afraid to write about it. City officials are afraid to combat it, or call it by its name. So it goes on. And it is not just the places where you might expect it: Chicago, Philly, Boston, Baltimore. It’s in smaller places in the Midwest as well.

    FP: Like where?

Flaherty: Ames, Iowa. They had a “Beat Whitey Night” at the State Fair.  Peoria, Illinois. They had almost a dozen episodes of racial violence and lawlessness by black mobs over the last year. Milwaukee. Minneapolis. Seattle. Portland. And on and on.

FP: So what is causing this?

Flaherty: A lot of people in this country are still in a state of denial that these riots and mob lawlessness even exist. So I do not see the point of speculating about cause on something that lots of reporters and political leaders refuse to believe even happen.

Ten years, if we had this conversation, they would have said the same thing: “It’s not happening. You are imagining it.” But today, many of these episodes are on YouTube. And that tells the real story. And part of that story is the reality of the music and video that are a part of their lives. For every horrific example of mob violence and mayhem, there is a popular video by a popular artist glorifying it. Looting, making crack cocaine, killing delivery drivers, beating up white people, rioting and stealing to name a few. These are highly produced, very professional songs and videos by the biggest names in hip hop that sell millions of copies and get millions of views.

this was definitely an interesting read.
