All of these posts about banning welfare recipients from spending money on X, Y, Z got me thinking. Should welfare recipients be banned from putting money in the collection plate at church? After all, if they can't afford to support themselves, should they really be taking the money from the government just to give some away?
Whether or not it could be enforced isn't the point. This is a philosophical question.

It sure isn't income. They didn't earn it by working.
since the church doesn't pay taxes it isn't a gift from "God".
Most people that receive forms of public assistance do so for a limited time and often have paid taxes prior to receiving it as well as paying taxes both during and after. So one could say they have "earned" the help as they paid towards it.

There are far more ways to use your blessings to help God than just money.

I voted no because it's ridiculous. You can't ban someone from tithing. lol

Yeah that's why it's my old church. My mom was s cancer patient and her only income was welfare and they still expected her to tithe. When she didnt i wasn't allowed to go to youth camp, even though i saved all year for it.

I wouldn't use the word banned, but I think welfare should only be for necessities, food, shelter, and toiletries.. If you are not earning anything then you don't really have an income to tithe from. If such person wants to give an offering, they can give of their time.
