All of these posts about banning welfare recipients from spending money on X, Y, Z got me thinking. Should welfare recipients be banned from putting money in the collection plate at church? After all, if they can't afford to support themselves, should they really be taking the money from the government just to give some away?
Whether or not it could be enforced isn't the point. This is a philosophical question.

Are you of the opinion that government assistance is a gift from God to the poor?
It sure isn't income. They didn't earn it by working.
since the church doesn't pay taxes it isn't a gift from "God".
Most people that receive forms of public assistance do so for a limited time and often have paid taxes prior to receiving it as well as paying taxes both during and after. So one could say they have "earned" the help as they paid towards it.

Not to sound unchristian, but your old church sucks.

At my old church if you didn't tithe you couldn't participate in ANY church functions. Breakfast with the pastor, nope. You couldn't teach sunday school, you couldnt be a praise singer nothing.

I do not think any church would expect anyone to give money that they truly could not give. I know our church doesn't. When someone at our church has a desire to tithe, but not the means, we suggest a time tithe. Come up and help with the youth group. Come up and help with our different service projects (we put together weekend food packs for the kids on free lunch at the school across the street, and other things like that). There are far more ways to use your blessings to help God than just money.

Yeah that's why it's my old church. My mom was s cancer patient and her only income was welfare and they still expected her to tithe. When she didnt i wasn't allowed to go to youth camp, even though i saved all year for it.
