Migrains in Preschooler (PIOG) update 1 & 2

In the last few months my 5 year old preschooler has been having severe migrains. He throws up from the pain, screams, writhes and tries to claw his eyes out. He had another episode tonight. I don't want to freak out. He isn't scheduled to see his doctor until September, but should I make him an appointment soon?

UPDATE #1

He is scheduled for a CT scan for tomorrow morning. His doctor has him on some medication currently as well, and we will continue the medication until his doctor tells us other-wise. Thank you everyone. I'll keep you posted on what the CT says when we find out the results.

UPDATE #2

I just got the phone call from the clinic saying the results are in. He has a polyp in his sinus cavity that is blocking his sinuses from draining correctly. He will continue the medication he is on and he has a follow up with the ENT to see about removing it so that he never has these again.

I'm so glad it isn't anything more serious. Again, thank you everyone.

My 9 year has suffered them since he was 6. We have noticed it gets worse when he is very tired or stressed. We took him to the specialist last year and they said that too much MSG can cause it. He told us to cut back. We also were told to put him on a B supplement. Certain canned foods we have noticed does it also. Has his vision been checked? If he is overtaxing the eyes that can also cause headaches.

Hm. Well his eyes are 20/20 checked in September. He was playing Legos with a friend while I made supper and my friend was cutting my other boys' hair. I am allergic to MSG so we avoid it. I can our own food, too. He ate cereal, natural popcorn and PB and J sandwhich today. Oh, and snuck sugar from my sugar bowl twice. He had soy chocolate milk and water to drink all day.

My migraines started when I was a toddler. It doesn't always mean there is something terribly wrong. It does mean he will most likely suffer from migraines for the rest of his life. If it is really bothering him, happening a lot, and no pain reliever helps him, take him to the doctor sooner.

Dd started getting them right before she turned 4 (just turned 5). Her vision was extensively checked, mri was clean. Her iron was low (neurologist wants it above 50, hers is 19) she is now on supplements. So far they are not as common and she has gone 2 months without one!

To the op. i had them like your boy and now as an adult they are very rare. Less than once a year. Many people outgrow them.

If he hasn't been evaluated by a doctor for them before then yes, he should be seen. There usually isn't anything major, but just to be sure. Going to the doctor shouldn't be a "freak out" deal. I wouldn't let him suffer like that for another 7 months.
