My turkeys come up to me and expect to be petted and talked to all the time ~ and they are free ranging. The peafowl, roosters, ducks, and guineas are the same. Even when they sleep in the trees and roam the woods all day, they still come running when they see us.
On the other hand, anyone trying to steal one is going to get a sudden case of lead poisoning. People around here have had goats, sheep, pigs, horses, donkeys, as well as chickens, rabbits, and calves stolen. It's in the papers almost every day that someone is missing something. This is why we have free ranging (and very noisy) poultry, dogs, and loaded guns.
Thieves don't care who or what they hurt, and they will pretty much take whatever is handy. Why BUY a turkey if the neighbor has one just wandering around? This is why I like most animals more than most people ...
