A British businessman convicted of multiple charges of child porn creation and possession has come up with one of the oddest excuses for his misdeeds ever. Craig Seville said the recession turned him into a pedophile. Well, now I've heard everything.
I'm sure that Seville's business, a flying school, was suffering as the economy flagged. Most of us cut out unnecessary items when things get tight, and flying lessons are most definitely unnecessary. But can you really blame the economy for giving you lustful thoughts about children?
I guess it's as good an excuse as any.
I don't think there is ANY excuse for being a pedophile that a sane person is going to accept. So why not blame the recession for the nearly 450 banned images you downloaded onto your computer and then Photoshopped? Why not blame the economy for propositioning and exposing yourself to an undercover officer who you thought was a 12-year-old girl?
It's ridiculous. I can see why people are outraged at Seville right now. His "excuse" makes him sound extremely callous.
But come on, would any other excuse be any better? Would he really be able to come up with some sort of reason for being a lecherous perv that would make us say, "Well, yeah, OK, that makes sense?" I should hope not!
The fact of the matter is, peddling in child porn is illegal and completely immoral. I don't care if someone is holding a gun to your head, you do not expose yourself to a child. You don't destroy the lives of helpless children in a box or with a fox. You do not do it, Sam I Am.
I don't really care why Craig Seville is a pedophile. I'm just glad that he's behind bars now, away from the children he's been hurting.
How about you?

Agree. There is no excuse, so whatever they say is as outrage worthy as the next guy's story. Glad this one's locked up.

There is no excuse for his deviant behavior.
Castration seems like an appropriate punishment, imo.

i really do not care what excuse this pedofile gave, it is a bunch of garbage. there is no reason to view this kind of garbage. a child is a child of God and he should be treated like one and not exposed on the internet.this person obviously has issues and definitely needs help.

I'm not clear on a few things.
One. The guy sold child porn. There are a great many people involved in the porn industry who are not deviants or pedophiles. They are greedy, they are callous, they probably qualify on a dozen levels for a diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder, but they aren't all necessarily perverts. Many are, but many are not.
It's important to understand this because this is one of the major reasons that this ah...'industry' is so persistent. Because any one who wants to make a fast buck is attracted to the industry. They don't care about the children, or the damage being done to the children. They care about the money.
In a strange way, these people are even more despicable than the pedophiles.
In other words, this idiot's 'explanation' is very worth listening to and understanding. Because this 'industry' DOES attract every greedy, unprincipled jerk who wants to make some money. That is TRUE.
Rest assured, his 'explanation' isn't going to win him a shorter sentence or any form of leniency. It just 'goes to show ya', as they say.
And what he is saying is true- that the recession pushes some people who are teetering on the edge of getting involved in illegal and immoral activities, to going ahead and getting involved with the business. Definitely.
For a good many people, 'morality' is a matter of convenience. They don't commit adultery - because someone hasn't asked them yet. They don't steal - because nobody left the cash register open yet. They don't cheat on their taxes - because they haven't figured out how to yet. If the slightest opportunity occurs, or if things are getting a little slow at Pilot School, sure, over they go.
The porn industry is all about victimizing people in order to make money. OF COURSE people who want to make more money are drawn to it. And some of them are actually perverts and some are not. Well, they're perverts of another kind altogether - and equally despicable, or perhaps more.
WHY is someone a pedophile?
There are two basic theories.
One is that THEY were abused when THEY were young. Never had a chance to have a normal life. They don't know anything different.
Some criminals (pedophiles and others) were indeed abused. Others have simply learned to say that in an effort to manipulate people. But yes, a history of abuse is not exactly unusual in criminals.
I actually think there can be quite a bit of hope for a person who gets convicted of pedophilia and is doing it because they were abused themselves. Early learning may seem like it is 'set in cement' in a person - it can be very, very difficult to 'redo' such memories and learning. Don't kid yourself into believing that such learning is easy to remove from a brain. But it IS possible.
Since many of these people very badly want to be well but simply don't believe it's possible, I think it takes time, a lot of work, and treatment of any underlying problems (depression, alcoholism) and is quite a challenge, but can be done.
I think many of these people 'lose the battle'. They feel so angry, so bitter, so furious at the world and the people who were supposed to protect them - they find themselves doing these things and they simply give up. They believe what they are told - that they are hopeless, unredeemable, unsavable, and essentially evil and disgusting. They give up. Many believe they have tried 'everything' and they simply - give up.
The other is that something is amiss in that person's brain. Their brain does not work normally. I mean like fundamentally.
I don't think there is a lot of hope for this sort of person. Supervision, incarceration, that is just about all that can be offered at this point in time. If there is a fundamental flaw in a brain and no medication lessens it, that's a bad thing.
No, I don't actually think castration really alters what's wrong with these people. Nor meds that stop sexual response. I think people in favor of those things believe pedophilia is about being 'oversexed' or having a 'too strong sex drive'. I don't believe that is what causes pedophilia. I think it is a far more general and more fundamental problem than that.
I think the defect in the brain is a fundamental one, and profound. They are not getting normal thoughts and impulses - the brain is simply and fundamentally, abnormal.
Oh don't get me wrong. I don't say this because I want to urge the world to set them all free. I have no pity or kindness in my heart toward these people. And this is crucial - they may have abnormal brain processes, but there's an other part of the disease - which is a very bizarre indifference to what sort of effect they have on their victims and their families, and a full knowledge that it is wrong, and they are doing something wrong.
I think that it being an actual brain disorder in some of them, is why it is so persistent. And I think it is an argument in favor of longer incarceration of pedophiles. And no, I don't know of a sure way to tell the 'brain impaired' people from the 'could be saved' people. That's kind of a problem.
But to continue. The brain normally has a sort of 'compass' that 'fine tunes' emotions and drives and desires. Much of what we experience as 'thought' or 'need' develops deep in the brain and then receives 'fine tuning' by this 'compass'. If that process is defective at any point, I believe you get a Jerry Sandusky or a Gary Glitter.
I actually do think some of these people may improve somewhat on medication. There are medications that reduce impulsive thinking and reduce the number and intensity of impulses the person gets. That may work in some cases.
Occasionally, harming people or children can be part of a psychotic disorder. Hostility - anger, urges to harm people, either just by itself or as part of a delusion, can occur in some psychotic disorders.
I haven't seen it often. But hostility actually is one of the possible symptoms of psychosis. It's caused by excess activity on the mesolimbic nerve pathway. Normally there is a whole system in the brain that 'fine tunes' emotions and drives, moderating them and smoothing them out. If the communication within that system is disturbed it may not be able to do its job.
I dealt with one patient like this(one out of many, many people over many years). If he stopped taking or cut down on his medication, within a day or two after, he would get angry. REALLY angry. I mean like snarling. Just awful. And would have thoughts about hurting kids - he'd never actually done it, but when he was well enough to think it through, he'd avoid any place where children would be. And yes, he had been s. abused by a sibling.
