Because insecurities sell. "Create a need and fill it" is pretty much the mantra of marketing. Once you realize how nonsensical that is, it doesn't affect you. It's an issue of self-esteem. And that's why the CM poll results don't surprise me at all.
Andrew brought up a great point, though. You can't "feel important" just because "somebody needs you." That's just sacrificing self-esteem to self-denial.
