I have the big shot and I love it. It is the only diecut machine I have so I use it for everything. They work great with all the flat embossing folders and dies (for die cuts) If you want to use an embossing plate you have to have the silicone mat to use with it. I have 5 embossing folders that I use with mine, I want to get more later.

Thanks! I will make sure i get the mat. I am so excited now that i hear from someone about it! Lol

The embossing folders are just like little folders, you open them and place your paper inside, close them then run them through the machine to emboss your design, open them up and remove your paper. They come in different sizes so you can choose to get ones that will just emboss a small area or a whole sheet of paper.
The embossing plates are plates that emboss a bigger area (sometimes a whole sheet of regular size paper) at one time. These are what you have to use the silicone mat for.
My sizzix big shot came with a multi purpose platform that shows you which tab to use with each thing and what you need to use with them.
On tab one it shows you how to use metal stencils, sizzix texturz, embosslits, clearlits, textured impressions (embossing folder), sizzlets, simple impressions (embossing folder).
On tab two it shows the wafe thin die (quikutz dies)
On the bottom plate it shows you the regular embossing folder and the sizzix texturz (with chipboard)
What I like is that you can use other companies flat dies, embossing plates, and embossing folders. I have dies from quikutz, cuttlebug, and sizzix. My embossing folders are cuttlebug.

Oh this sounds like fun! Thanks for all the help! I seen there are 2 big shots. I was looking at the one for$60 but seen there is on for over $300. I figured i would only need the small one but what one do you have?

I have the $60 one. The more expensive one is the big shot pro (it uses all the same dies as the little one, except for it also has it's own dies that can only be used on the big shot pro)

Yea I think I will keep with the small one cause I don't see using it soooo much to spend the money on the machine and the bigger folders.

Me to. It depends on the size of the big folders and embossing pads whether or not you can use them with the regular big shot. There are small embossing pads that can be used with the small one
