Hockey Tryouts this weekend edit - he made the team
September 6, 2012 at 1:51 PM

My son has his hockey tryouts on Friday and Saturday.  He is looking at making the MD novice team.  He just turned 7 in July so would be playing up a division if he made the team.  He is actually calm and is just looking at going out and having fun while doing his best.  Hopefully things go well and he has fun whether he makes the team or not.

Well he made it past the first round of cuts.  They went from 60 prospects down to 24 prospects.  Next is another tryout on Wednesday where they will now be in with the eight year olds.  They only take 15 seven year olds to play up on the novice teams.

Well tonight is the next round of tryouts.  This tryout has the 24 seven year olds and 26 remaining eight year olds.  If he get past this stage the final stage is on Thursday.

Well it is on to the final step of the tryouts. He has made it to tomorrow. Now it just depends what they decide to do. Currently the have 19 seven year olds including three goalies, and 18 eight year olds. Now originally they were wanting to get to 14 seven year olds plus two golies, and 16 eight year olds. But a few people have said that they may go with 16 seven year olds plus all three goalies, then have 14 eight year olds and take one 8 year old goalie. We will see tomorrow what actually happens.

The strange thing is the seven year olds are stronger than the eight year olds.  In the race for the puck - almost every time the seven year old won.  In the backwards skating drill one player starts off on the icing line and goes forward the other starts off on the blue line going backwards they then race down the ice.  The seven year old caught the eight year olds every time, while the eight year olds only caught them  a small fraction of the time.

It is amazing how strong these seven year olds are.  It will be sad to see any of them cut from the team.
