Does anyone have info on these issues?
October 12, 2012 at 8:23 AM

If in anyone is willing to take the time to help me out. I am finding the presidential elections very confusing. One says one thing and the other says something different. I have looked at their websites, but hardly any facts are given. I need some help with facts.

1. China. Obama says the Republicans and Romney support tax cuts for companies that send business overseas and that he supports tax cuts for businesses who will bring their jobs back here
Romney says he wants to bring business back to the US as well.
Are they both on the same page? Does one have a history of supporting outsourcing and one have a history of trying to get jobs back? These things are hard to find when you don't have the best research skills.

2. Energy. Romney's plan is to use more of America's natural resources and in doing this he will create more jobs here and cut spending by getting oil from overseas. This sounds great, but how will this impact our environment? I like the idea of solar and wind and things like that, I do worry about what drilling and all of that will do to the environment. What are your thoughts on this?

3. Taxes. I am not a numbers person. I don't understand tax plans, all I can go on is what they say and they are both promising a tax plan that will help the middle class.

Common sense will tell you the reason both Romney and Ryan will not even tell you one loophole or tax deduction they will reform (eliminate) to pay for the 20% across the board tax cut should tell you that they DO NOT want you to know because you will not like it.A 6-7% tax reduction will put $300-400 (maybe more) in my pocket every WEEK, and I'm saying no to that why?? Please tell me. Because that extra money I can save and pay my bills. I can't pay my November mortgage payment with my April refund.  As you are already aware that the $300 more in you pocket is a miscalculation and that take home will increase is bases upon tax withheld before and after cut.  This amount like the income tax cuts Obama had given all working people with stimulus monies and his second cut related to payroll taxes will not and does not come close to covering a mortgage payment although we in the middle class all wish it would.  I can tell you though that the 20% cut for someone making a million will.  In April you do not want to face the fact that a deduction you have been taking for years like mortgage interest has been eliminated or significantly reduce and now you have to come up with paying instead of getting a refund.  I'm already being taxed the highest I can. I am "claim 0, married but withhold at the single higher rate"..I'm IN the 35% tax bracket, WITH a mortgage, 2 kids, 1 of which is in college. I have NOT received ANY stimulus monies. AND I'm fortunate enough to have recieved a market adjustment raise, not too long ago. The problem is the economy, which Obama has done nothing to stimulate. Unless you call giving out cell phones stimulating.

And remember across the board means the cuts to the middle class will be significantly less than those of the rich and because the income gap is so wide the offset to those dollars is going to be paid for by who? I'd LOVE to see how, because I can't claim ANY thing on my W2..I can't claim myself, my dh OR my kids. NOTHING, NO ONE. As a matter of fact (I've said this before) I HAVE to claim "0 and married but withhold at the single higher rate", otherwise I OWE the gov't money in April. I'm not poor, I'm not rich, honey, I AM the middle class and I'm getting squeezed NOW, and it's gotten worse over the last 4 years. Sorry but I can't afford another 4 years of the same thing. 20% of 1 million (200,000) will be payed for by you, the middle class if it is not to effect the deficit and the how is to cut your deductions (or has Romney told us what deduction he will cut for the millionaire to cover the 200K).  Unless you lost your job or took a big cut in wages or bought a new home or recently are experiencing heath cost you did not have your living situation if not good today was most likely not good 4 years ago.  So I am sorry to hear it is getting worst over the last 4 years but you fail to say what policy Obama has implemented that has made your life worst.  Yes, the middle class has been squeezed over the last 4 years (and the previous 8) but you need to thank the destruction of the economy and policies of your Republican friends who put us in the hole and have been working hard these last 4 years keep you their bybeing the record NO on helping Obama grow our ecomony for the middle class instead of just the rich who have been doing just fine thought it all.  The rules on W2 have not changed so if they are not good for you now they where not good for you before. It was Barney Frank, a DEMOCRAT, that spearheaded the deregulation, you can't blame republicans. Clinton signed NAFTA, so because he had republican co-operation it's now the republican's fault?? But the current state of our economy is also the republicans fault because they're not co-operating with Obama? Sounds like in your eyes republicans are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I bought my house 6 years ago, moved to provide a better life and education for my sons...that was BEFORE Obama. Since Obama, I'm underwater on my house, and the programs he blabs about to modify are lies. The loan to debt ratio is practically at equity rate. If I had equity....

Not the poor, and certainly not the rich who make most of their income of investments rather than labor and those (capital gains) dollars are also excluded along with dividends and the death tax and you cannot comprehend that basic mathematics means they will be paid for by the middle class.  And you have already been told that the financial wizards have already calculated that means middle class actual taxes will go up by thousands of dollars.   Not to mention the fact that at the debate, Romney stated he's promoting a PRINCIPAL, and that he's open to ideas from dems and republicans alike as to how we get the the end result. That it's not just Romney's way..he wants democrats and republicans to sit together and find solutions that make both sides content.  That it will be wonderful when the Republican sat down with Obama or in the Senate with themselves or House to work for solutions to our problems with democrats instead of just saying no to all hoping that if we do not improve they can take back the White House. How is Romney going to remedy the pledge not to raise taxes on anyone that his buddies have all signed.  Stave the beast is not a conspiracy theory but a fact.

Those arguing that their paycheck will be bigger are quite short sighted that at tax time they will be shelling out money that had better been saving for.  Or you can put it on the credit card and really start putting yourself in the hole the Republican Party has been digging for the middle class for years. Odd because for the first time in my 21 year marriage I have amassed almost $10K in credit card debt, which has been done over the last 4 years. You DO realize that it was the DEMOCRATS that pulled the rip cord on banking regulations and subprime mortgages? AND it was the DEMOCRATS that signed NAFTA. The credit card exposion took place before Obama for both DC with unpayed for tax cuts, two wars and a unpayed for perscription plan and well as the people and it took Obama to implement reforms to prevent abuses the banks where pushing on us.  Yes, I would think it odd that you are in debt now and not before unless as I stated early you family situation changed but to no fault of the Obama admistration.  And if because of Obama I would like to possible know why and what he did.  You are correct on the pulled rip cord so some extent as it did take place with Clinton and let's get the facts straight a Republican house.  But is was the LACK OF ENFORCEMENT of remaining rules under Bush and company that cause the crash.  Subprime was a Wall Street invention as well as the corruption that came from it. Barney Frank, was instrumental in deregulationi. Not Bush..again, I'll say it, you like to blame the republicans when they co-operate, and like to blame them when they don't. You can't have it both ways.

They have been putting you and our government into debt for years and now telling you it has to stop with more cuts to those who do not need them.  An honest person would tell you exactly how it the cuts will be paid for and only the dishonest need to keep it a secret.  These same people tell you the want to save Medicare for you when in fact they did not like it from the beginning and have for years tried to make it disappear and privatize it.  You and other on the right say its socialized medicine and government controlled which makes it bad for the American people and also say you want to save it.  Those are contradictory statement  I guess you also think the health insurance business and the pharmaceuticals  have your best interest in mind and have such a great job on keep out cost down and service high and we do not have a major problem with the system we have had for our under 65 people.  Do you know the definition of the word gullible?  That is who the right has been counting on and yes,  it works sorry to say.  Think about the simple truth of human behavior. What we NEEDED was INSURANCE reform what our gov't gave us was HEALTHCARE reform, because insurance companies have lobbyists, and lobbyists have congressmen/women in their back pockets so which congressman/woman is going to go against a corporation that's donated to their campaign? When you find one, let me know.  You cannot separate with words, insurance from health care in the USA.  The are one in the same for years including the experimentation of HMO's the reduce cost when then did a much better job on reducing services.  The lobbyist take over of Washington was at its peak with Cheney takeover on welcoming them all to sit down with him and tell me what you want and rewrite our law to their benefit.  Yes, Dems became part of the problem but at least they want to put some rules and regulation and controls into place while the right want it to let them do what they want.   Tell me who is for and says "corporations are people and money is speach"?   It should also help you understand who is for the middle class (working American taxpayers) and who says corporation rule and the just wait for trickle down, it's coming.

Thank you!!! You have summed up what I've been trying to say for idk how long.

    Bless you!

This is the problem with democrats, they use scare tatics. Threatening abortion, medicare, medicaid, social security, benefits for the elderly.

I've said this before in another reply, but honestly, Barack Obama promised his presidency away to Ted Kennedy who overnight switched his support to Obama from Hillary, and made national health care his "cause". Because Kennedy was dying and desperately wanted it passed before he died. Which is why the dems made their back room, back alley deals to get it passed. And on top of it, if anyone truely believes the Ted Kennedy gave a damn that people had no insurance they are delusional.

Because if ANY Washington politician gave a shit about the under or un insured in this country, they'd repeal their elice, exclusive, deluxe congressional only health insurance plan. A plan that WE pay for.

    Quoting pvtjokerus

Actually, it didn't.  It was well written but you left out some big issues.  Who voted for the wars?  Both demo and repubs.  So don't blame it on one party.   Who predicted the housing market collaspe but was over ruled by Barney Frank and others?  Bush advised them on Freddie and Fannie and basically, the demos told him and the Repubs to pound sand.  Yes, Medicare D was Bush's baby and yes early in the 2000s the Repubs spent a lot.  But the Demos have had the stage since 2006.  That is six years of control that the demos have had and what do we have to show for it?  A lower credit rating, failing economy, out of control spending, unbalanced budget, and continuing resolution for 3 1/2 years that has crippled Federal Agencies and the remainder of the government and a socialized health care system that can't be paid for.  Bottom line is that we are going backwards and the democrats want to continue to take us backwards.  If you continue down this path, make sure your kids learn a dialect of Chinese.

Typical instead of debating me she call me stupid.  For anyone just tuning in, this is what carpy does. She tells you how dumb you are in one sentence, but never backs it up withfacts.  Queen of the one liners. I want to say sorry to the OP you came here for answers and probably got confusing conflicting arguments.  Hope you can take it all in and decide what is best for you.

Yes I have heard of cutting wasteful spending, that is the difference between you and I.  I can plainly see to help bring the deficit down you need to do both, bring in more revenue and cut wasteful spending. The democrats also understand it will take both.  It's the republicans who are the ones who refuse to do one  of these because they signed a pledge to a lobbyist never to raise taxes. Paying taxes is your patriotic duty.

    Quoting Carpy:

Only for you socialists who believe that hard earned money belongs to the government.  Ever hear of cutting wasteful spending?

    Quoting mommom2000:

This saying is the one of the funniest talking points of all of them.  It's common sense, where do you think the government receives revenue to run this country?  If they are taking in X amount of dollars and then you cut the same X amount of dollars then that is lost revenue.  The money has to come from somewhere.  That's like saying I don't have a job and I am in debt, the only problem I have is a spending problem, not a revenue problem.  That person still needs to live, the need an income not just to curb there spending
Again simple math spending and taxes is the budget.  You can't just cut taxes, and think the money will just fall out of the sky.  Please explain why you keep using this same talking point over and over?

    Quoting Carpy:

When someone references tax cuts not being paid for, their credibility just went down the toilet.

Are we going to erase history and leave out 2001 through 2005 when we had two unpaid for tax cuts, the start of two wars that where off the books and an unfunded Medicare D plan?  From 2006 we had unenforced Wall Street and banking manipulations up though the end of 2008 and I believe Bush was in control and we do know that it is the executive branch that does our enforcement.  And the melt down this caused and lost of jobs was so big that even the best of economist did not predict its severity.  Now since 2009 we stopped the freefall and began to turn things around ever so slowly thanks the the interference of those who not only caused the problem but want to take back control to insure that the corporations remain in control doing their way.  And the continued weakiing of the middle class (the American workers) to help prevent another Obama type (Democrat) take over of the White House that would help give us back the standard of living and world leadership we once had..  We need to continue to dig ourselves out of the hole our Republican friends put us in and to many people are in to big a hurry to understand it takes time to right a sinking ship.  I want to contiue moving forward and not go backwords and continue to wait for the triclkle down you think is just around the corner.  The job creators have had their tax cuts now for 12 years, where are the jobs?  Oh, they need more you say?  I hope that answered you question.

Very good Kennedy assessment.  I actually forgot about all of that.  I hear that Carolyn Kennedy got stubbed throughout Obama's tenure until he recently needed her again.  I also read the family is really torn in supporting Obama cuz' they see him for what "he really is."

    Quoting 143myboys9496:

By claiming "0" exemptions on your W4 you are maximizing the dollars being withheld and minimizing your take home pay.  This is done to give you the highest refund at tax time.  If you want more money to spend with each pay check then you must increase your number to include you, your husband and kids.  But keep in mind as they take out less, come tax time you will get less in refund and possibly even need to pay.  The W4 exemptions does not change your tax rate or dollars, only when you pay the taxes.  If you increase the number your W2 will reflect a lower total dollars on Federal Income Tax Withheld with no effect to other taxes.  Do not confuse this with the Exemptions on your 1040 tax return  which does affect your tax rate and tax amount.

The Obama Stimulus package definitely included tax relief for working Americans and Obama again boosted your take home pay to again put more money in your pocket each pay check and had it extended this year not thanks to the no votes on the Republican side.  Sorry you are misinformed that it did not.

    http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/jan/28/barack-obama/tax-cut-95-percent-stimulus-made-it-so/

    http://www.irs.gov/uac/Payroll-Tax-Cut-to-Boost-Take-Home-Pay-for-Most-Workers%3B-New-Withholding-Details-Now-Available-on-IRS.gov

You need to expand your news sources beyond Fox News and right wing blogs who must have failed to tell you about these.  They have been reported in most newspapers and on most news reporting TV stations.  If you listen only to those supporting the corporate takeover of American government and the sponsors of the Republican Party who also supports the corporations are people and money is speech side you will be fed very miss-represented facts of information on what is happening to the American worker and its middle class.

I am sorry to hear you bought your house at the very worst time in our history of inflated prices, gimmicky mortgages rates and pure corruption on the part of our banks, Wall Street and rating organizations.  And no, Barney Franks role is extremely insignificant to the federal watch dog groups put to sleep by their boss and ruler, King George.  It is the executive branch that enforces our laws and their neglect and participation is what killed the housing market and our economy BEFORE Obama and this retooling of let no rules and regulations began years ago and if your listen with an open mind you will hear today, who is for eliminating such rules and who is implementing or I should say trying to implement some to he help prevent such a meltdown again.  Do I have to name who wants meaningful and reasonable rules and regulation and who says we do not need any, the corporations will police themselves and we need less of them like we had before the crash?

You MUST look into your refinancing opportunities.  They required hard work get but they can save you big time as they have many others.  A decrease in your interest rate can save you significantly and if lucky enough a reduction in principle can also be had but your need to work at it and I wish you luck.  Do not give up based upon false or misleading information.  They are out there to get and even more now than last year.  Obama did not cause the housing crash and in no way could stop it and prevent what happened to you on his watch.  Your destiny was determined when you bought and the terms you bought at.

If you fail to blame those truly responsible you are closing your eyes and ears to the future.  Democrats did indeed play a role but is was a back seat role to the drivers (your Republican friends) who drove us over the cliff and landed your and the rest of the country (excluding the rich) in the position when Obama took over.  The middle class continues to get poorer if they had lost a job or like you bought a home at the wrong time and it appears you are looking to go back to the same people who put you in this environment.

When someone references tax cuts not being paid for, their credibility just went down the toilet.

The question isn't whether Ryan has stated that the tax cuts will balance.

The question is about the assumptions Ryan et al are making, in order for their predicted numbers to work.

If you reduce everyone's tax rate by 20%, that's going to pretty much halve the tax rate, isn't it?   So, in order to get the same amount of money coming in, you'll need to DOUBLE the amount of taxable income.

Care to say what the shortest period over which that has ever happened, in the history of the USA?

And how quickly does Ryan require it to happen, in order for things to balance?

    1. China.

Romney wants to hold China accountable for their acts, and wants to stop borrowing money from them hand over fist which is what Obama has been doing for 4 years. If China called next week and said "pay up America" we'd all be learning Mandarin.

That's not really the way things work.

T-Bills are promises to pay a certain fixed number of dollars at a certain fixed future point in time (eg 10 years from the date of issue).   These T-Bills get auctioned off, rather that sold to specific people.  And they can be resold.   So the government doesn't control who owns the debt, but it does control when each bit of the debt can be called due.

Not quoting the above because of length but Obama's tax cut was payroll tax which is what funds social security.

So much mis-information being presented a repy to each of your points would be worthless on one who has so little knowledge of the actual facts but with regard to the wars, the Democrats voted to go to war as a last resort if necessary because of the 9-11 actions.  They had little to do with the invasion of Iraq that killed hundreds of thousands of people and made million homeless to a bad war and had little to do with the neglect of early actions in Afghanistan.   Do not mix facts of why we bombed Baghdad and who supported it with the vote you reference as both voted for it.  Bush was incharge of the financial regulators who job it was to keep Wall Street and the banks honest and Freddie and Fannies problem is they turned there backs on protecting the people from the robbers.  And stop pretenting why our credit rating dropped when you know it was because of the fight to prevent increase on the debt.  I will leave it at that.

Who has controlled the majority since 2006?

Common sense will tell you the reason both Romney and Ryan will not even tell you one loophole or tax deduction they will reform (eliminate) to pay for the 20% across the board tax cut should tell you that they DO NOT want you to know because you will not like it.  And remember across the board means the cuts to the middle class will be significantly less than those of the rich and because the income gap is so wide the offset to those dollars is going to be paid for by who?  Not the poor, and certainly not the rich who make most of their income of investments rather than labor and those (capital gains) dollars are also excluded along with dividends and the death tax and you cannot comprehend that basic mathematics means they will be paid for by the middle class.  And you have already been told that the financial wizards have already calculated that means middle class actual taxes will go up by thousands of dollars.
