You should get a thank you... it's just the decent thing to do when given a gift whether you asked for it or not. I have to agree with the poster above that maybe there is some embarrassment, but they should still suck it up and say thank you.

She did. She said she would get it if she had the money. It was a need BTW, not a want.

You should get a thank you. But many times kids don't, in fact this kid might be in the majority. This isn't his fault, but his mom's. I'd let it go. (My trick to get a written thankyou and a call to the giver from my kids is to put the item on a visible but high shelf and tell them they can use it when their thankyou is done. If they don't really like the present, so don't care about access to it, I give them a week, and then shut down their phone till it's done - which happens fast! LOL)
Given this reality, give purely out of the joy of giving, and fully let this go.
