Fun facts
June 19, 2013 at 5:44 AM

Since I am having withdrawals from the other post, I figured I would post some fun facts.

The Kennedys redecorated the White House since Mrs. Kennedy thought the furniture was too cheap!

Back in 1961, Jackie Kennedy decided to do a renovation of the White House by replacing the cheap furniture bought by the Trumans with pieces of the White House historical furniture!

Jackie Kennedy was so obsessed with the whole redecorating process, that along with Dorothy Mae “Sister” Parish she started the job right away. She started by reediting several of the family bedrooms and few other rooms. She decided to do several redecorations around the entire house! For instance, she converted the former Prince of Wales suite into a Private Dining Room!

The Kennedys were able to declare the White House a museum, they did this in order to preserve it and they accepted many antique furniture that fitted the White House! She even asked the Eisenhowers to give back the Washington era China they had taken home after leaving office!

Many of the “modern” rooms seen at the White House are all renovated thanks to Mrs. Kennedy’s great sense of decoration. So next time you decide to pay a visit to the White House remember that behind all it's history, the Kennedy era is among it.

Lighting hit a WWI bomb forgotten by the British and the bomb killed a cow!

This cow could be considered a close relative of “bad luck Brian”, especially since it is considered the single unluckiest cow in history of existence because it died from a bomb explosion that was caused from a lighting that was able to detonate a 50,000 pound bomb that was forgotten by Britain for over 20 years!

During WWI, 21 enormous mines were buried in the Belgian countryside by the British army, making these 21 mines the largest planned non-nuclear explosion in history!

General Herbert Plumer of the British army spent 18 months planning this single deadliest non-nuclear blast, making each mine heavier than 50,000 pounds each! That would be a grand total of 600 tons!

However, only 19 of those bombs went off, killing over 10,000 Germans. One of the two remaining bombs was struck by lighting and thus it killed the poor cow. As for the other one it's location it’s still unknown. Let’s hope “Bad Luck Brian” doesn’t visit Belgian territory anytime soon.

Soldiers in the German Army can disobey certain orders!

Yep, it’s true; in the German Army, soldiers are obliged to disobey any order they think would violate human dignity. Few, if any other armies have this rule!

This is all based in the principle of "command and obedience in the Bunderswehr". This doesn't mean they can disobey anything, though. Ifa soldier insubordinates for other reasons, he/she may be punished with imprisonment up to three years if they acted negligently.

This human dignity exception was enacted in the 1950s, after seeing what blind obedience did to Nazi Germany soldiers. This rule now means that soldiers need not fear retribution if a commander's orders would lead to something horrible like it did with the Nazis.

A torture scene in Game of Thrones portrays an actual method of tortures used in Soviet Russia!

Big Games of Thrones fan? Remember the torture scene with the rat in the heated pot? Well, that was an actual method of torture used during the Red Terror! The Red Terror occurred in Soviet Russian, and back during this era there were several events occurring, such as mass killings, torture, and systematic oppression.

One of the torture methods that were used was one in which rats were placed in iron tubes sealed at one end with wire netting and the other placed against the body of a prisoner, with the tubes being heated until the rats gnawed through the victim’s body in an effort to escape.

This was only one of the torture methods used during the red terror, some people were frozen to death, others skinned people to make gloves, and these are just some of the terrible things that people would use to torture back then.

So don’t forget; you are actually learning some history from watching Games of Thrones! Sadly you’ll have to wait a little bit longer until next season comes up and you can keep up with the great learning process.

A Greek taxi driver has the world record for longest mileage in a single car: 2.9 million miles!

Greek taxi driver Gregorios Sachinidis from Thessalonica donated his 1976 Mercedes to the Mercedes Benz Museum Collection! It may seem like a classic Mercedes from the outside, but on the inside, more importantly when looking at the mileage, you will see that his car has 4.6 million kilometers on it!

The massive distance covered by this single taxi cab has been a milestone in convincing people that Mercedes-Benz cars can travel an extremely far distance before they need to be turned in! Since Gregorios Sachinidis was donating his car to the Museum, Mercedes-Benz decided to donate a brand new C 200 CDI to be picked up by him, whenever he feels ready after he returns to his home in Thessalonica!

A 9-year-old once robbed a bank in New York!

In 1981, a nine-year-old boy robbed the New York Bank for Savings in midtown Manhattan. And he got away with it, at least for a while. As the boy explained it, he had been playing in the bank and had his toy gun with him. He had used the gun and a woman had given him money.

This was what he told his parents later that day after they saw a news report of the incident. His parents then made him surrender to police. The boy's lawyer claimed that he had been heavily influenced by violence on television and was not really aware of what he was doing.

The boy was not known for being a troublemaker, but did watch a lot of TV. His parents were separated, and he lived with his father and grandparents in a Manhattan apartment. There, he would watch hours of shows like "Hogan's Heroes" and "The Rockford Files."

DC Comics once created a superhero named Dog Welder whose strategy was to weld dead dogs to people's faces!

DC Comics is behind several super hero legends, such as Spider-Man and Superman. They are one of the biggest and most well-known comic companies in the world. Even the best make mistakes though. And DC Comics made one when they created a super hero named Dog Welder.

While Dog Welder is a good guy, his technique for fighting bad guys is not be the prettiest or most effective. He takes dead dogs and welds them to villain's faces. Ouch. Also, gross. Not exactly the super hero we're used to. Some may argue that it actually takes a lot of skill to weld a dog to a human, but the fact remains that it is just disturbing. DC Comics should probably stick with their more typical super heros.

Google Earth may have found lost pyramids in Egypt!

Most people have heard of the Great Pyramids in Giza, Egypt. There are also 115 lesser known pyramids scattered throughout the country. Some of these have been covered by desert sand. Google Earth may have discovered more of these lost pyramids.

Google Earth is a mapping program that combines satellite technology and aerial photography. It started out as a project of the Central Intelligence Agency and was acquired by Google in 2004. Google Earth took images of what appear to be clusters of pyramids. The two sites are about 90 miles apart.

One of the sites has a distinct square shape and is about 140 feet across. It also contains a three small mounds arranged diagonally, which is similar to the Pyramids at Giza. The second site has four mounds. The two largest are about 250 feet across while the smaller two are closer to 100 feet across. If these do end up being pyramids, they will need to be certified and protected by Egyptian authorities.

Chicago isn't even in the top 100 windiest cities in the US!

Chicago is known as "The Windy City." And yes, it gets really windy in this Midwestern metropolis, particularly in the downtown area. The wind whips up off Lake Michigan and creates a bitter cold in the winter time. These gusts aren't actually why the city got this nickname though. The "wind" that the name refers to is actually the hot air blown by the city's infamous politicians.

In fact, Chicago isn't even on the list of the top 100 windiest cities in the United States. Six of the top ten cities on this list are actually in Massachusetts. These include Brockton, Framingham, Weymouth, Newton, Waltham, and Quincy.

Three of the other four cities in the top ten are in Colorado. These are Fort Collins, Loveland and Greeley. The final remaining city is Amarillo, TX. There are also other cities on the top 100 that are in Illinois and are apparently windier than Chicago. Some of these include Springfield, Waukegan and Decatur.
