Teachers and what we hate about you! UPDATE
by Anonymous
February 18, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Ok, perhaps hate is too strong a word. I will forfeit hate, and, replace with (strongly) dislike about parents.

Our job is to teach your children, according to the curriculum given for the grade being taught.

We aim to target all the different exceptionalities as much as possible. That is, the good teachers will try their utmost to do this.

What we hope parents will do to help their children is do the follow up at home. Read with them. Go through the homework with them. This will help kids to process and retain what they learned in school. If they do this regularly, even if they forgot about a test one day, they would still do great! Don't teach them to only study for tests...that isn't enough. Encourage them to be lifelong learners, by giving a damn about their education. Teachers can only do their part...parents need to help too!

Update: if all you took away from this is that I didn't give you a 1 to 10 detailing what I dislike about parents, you are completely missing the point. Read between the lines. The title is supposed to catch your attention!

I only see a list of things you would like parents to do ... nothing there about what you hate or don't like.

If you gave an assignment with the title of this post and a student turned in a paper that didn't address the topic, what grade would you give them?

No, i know. We are in the middle of his testing for autism, so we are dealing with a LOT of issues right now. Homework is just one of the more pronounced symptoms. For a "normal" kid, it wouldn't be so bad.

Sometimes it takes organizing their papers, subjects and so on. Some teachers feel a lot of hw is necessary, others are moving away from this.

    Quoting LeahJ:

I WISH it only took us 30 minutes with our middle school child. It's a nightmare. But that doesn't mean we blow him off. It just means my life is a living hell when it comes to his homework. Lol.

    Quoting Anonymous:

It really only takes 15 mins or so for the young ones. Maybe 30 mins or more from grade 5 onwards through middle school.

Yep, I'm a teacher in an inner city scho. Most the parents could Cate less about their child's education.

    What frustrates me about teachers:
_when they dont give parents at least an outline of what is going on at school, so reinforcement is a possibility
_when they are not prepared to teach new math, and present it incorrectly.
_when they dont respond to emails within 24 hours.
_they work 3/4 time for full time pay
_when they blame parents when they fail
_when they dont tell me someone hit my kid
    I have many more

I agree with you! My problem are the teachers teaching to the test. How should I go about my son's 30 page homework packet he receives on Mondays and finished my Friday? I want my child to be a lifelong learner. That's how I learned and I had no problem passing any standardized test required for school.

I support my kids' teachers and work ith my kids. I make my kids take responsibility for their actions and don't fix it if they dont' do it. They get consequences if they get a lower grade because they didn't do their best etc.  I am an involved parent and volunteer at the school etc. I ask my teachers what I can do to help but also how I can support them etc.

absolutely.  I taught in private schools for twenty years, with upper middle to well off children.  I work in a low income school district now and there are SO many problems, HUGE difference..  I was shocked that so many children in general ed classes were so far behind in reading/math.  They keep throwing these advanced curriculums at the kids and they cannot handle them, especially since so many of them were not given what they needed in the early years.  They came to school completely unprepared.  The special ed classrooms rarely  get parents to show up for open house.  Poverty affects education. Anyone who thinks preschool education is NOT important does not understand how the lack of it affects poor children. My sister teaches first grade in Fort Meyers, Florida, in the inner city.  She rarely meets the parents and they have severe behavioral and academic issues.

My Dd is in kindegarten. Her teacher expects us to do homework, cut out game pieces and play games, do specific arts and crafts and read every night. I resent her. It cuts into our family time and Dd is exhausted by 730. It is too much for a five year old.

Amen. I've got a parents who admit they DON'T help at all with HW. I teach SPED, students who have learning disabilities and need extra support. I have some admit they don't " do homework help." WTF!!!

You don't consider reading, arts and crafts, and playing games FAMILY TIME?

I wish all of my kids' teachers were with this. Don't bitch about shit if you're not willing to do something about it, eh?
