Yes, some are misdiagnosed but to say these disorders do not exist baffles me.

I'm one of the ones that thinks they're over-diagnosed... A teacher and my own MIL wanted to self diagnose my oldest with ADHD, two years later he's a normal kid with a normal amount of energy and no issues with concentrating... I'm glad I didnt listen to them and rush to a Dr... On the other hand, my youngest has sensory issues with clothing and loud noises... I know this, I dont need to go to a Dr to get her evaluated, we cope and we manage it, but its not something thats going to define her life or who she is...

I agree. My DS has SPD, and sees a developmental pedi next month (and then another one in June) to be tested for autism, and we are almost positive he is going to get a diagnosis.
If any of those women who claim these disorders don't exist were to spend one day with my son, I'm sure they would change their minds. -
If you're managing it on your own just fine then that's awesome, but I think an OT would probably be very beneficial for her.

I think if they quit giving every child who does not look into your eyes SSI I might take it a little more seriously. Most Dr.'s just go by what the parents tell them is going on and make a diagnosis. My daughters school would not get off my back when she was in 2nd grade until I took her to a psychiatrist. The school sent papers to the Dr and he was not even interested in hearing anything I had to say, he wanted to give me a prescription of Adderall and say she had ADHD. I ripped the prescription up in front of him and walked out the door. I am not saying it does not exist but I think it is definitely overly diagnosed.

Its something I've considered if she gets worse or her ability to cope gets worse...

I will give you that ADD and ADHD are overdiagnosed and probably diagnosed too quickly. But autism is very complex to diagnose, and requires a ton of observation by a developmental pediatrician or child psychologist.

That's what I do. But I had to get my son the diagnosis before I could get into the ot to show me what to do.
I've been told by many professionals to expect an autism diagnosis as he gets older but they aren't comfortable giving it yet. It's not something they take lightly.

Therapy that could be taught to parents. The parents could do it.
Quoting briansmommy2010:
That would MAYBE make sense, except that disorders like autism and SPD are not treated with medication. They require different types of therapy, and a lot of extra work. But there is no magic pill that makes autism go away.
Quoting Anonymous:
I think it's all fake because parents would rather medicate than parent. Raising kids is hard, so lets give them a fucking complex and medication for it.

That's great! How old is she? Luckily my little guy is still young enough to get his OT services through early intervention. And by the time he ages out he will have gotten an official diagnosis of SPD, and probably autism as well, so he will have a lot more services available to him.

She's 5 now... it was something that has really only been an issue for about a year and a half or so... It was really rough in the begining, the meltdowns and such, but I've learned a lot, and we're still working on it...
