ETA 2
I know not all Caucasians are Americans. I know there's dark skinned French people. My grandfather is from France. He moved to Puerto Rico, got married and had my father. My father was born in PR and identifies with being a Puerto Rican. I was born in PR so I am Puerto Rican. My kids were born in America so they are Americans and they know their Puerto Rican culture.

I'm giving up now. Apparently, I'm stupid and I keep digging my hole deeper and deeper. I'm going to find a ledge now. See you later.

ETA
Ok now that I got you guys all riled up let me clarify a few things. I did put a warning and said that it was going to be ignorant...so stop telling me. I already know. Secondly I do know that not all "white" people have the same views as my "friends", they're actually dh's friends. My problem is not with being called Mexican, it's with being called brown. I am not brown. I do not refer to all "white" people as white because white is a fucking color. Just like "black" people are not black they're African American to me. No one is actually black. I refer to "white" people as Americans. If I'm really that curious I would just ask where they parent's are from and then I'll get my answer. Another thing that I do not like is when people say that they are Jewish. That's nice of you to tell me but I didn't ask about your religion...that's a whole other post.

So if you must, go ahead and continue to bash away.

...think that all spanish/hispanic people are Mexican? Do they all call us brown people? I'm Puerto Rican and I'm really light skinned. When I had blonde hair, people who didn't know me didn't know that I was from PR. My husband is Puerto Rican too but he's really dark compared to me. Our kids are in between. Lol. We have friends that are from the south, we live in NYC. When they came to visit us they kept referring to us as brown people. My dh had no problem with. I on the other did. A big problem. So to go back to my question. Do white people think that all Hispanics come from the same country? I do know not all white people think the same.

You can not lump "ALL" of a race in one category first of all. Of course some white people call all Hispanic people Mexican but not all. My best friend said the actually more black people call her Mexican than white people..

No.  But I'm a Spanish teacher and am aware that Spanish speaking people come from 20+ different countries.  That being said, I do think a lot of white (American) people think all Spanish speakers are Mexican...ha, try calling a Spaniard "Mexican" and see what reaction you get!  LOL

    I don't.

But then again, I grew up around a lot of hispanic people from many different countries.

When I was younger, I thought all hispanics were Puerto Rican! My cousin's best friend was Puerto Rican and I was at my cousin's house all the time. We were like the 3 musketeers. In fact that boy became my first boyfriend when we were older.

I have cousins who are half Mexican and one had red hair that she got from her (Mexican) dad's sister.

My 13 yr old son is half Mexican and his dad is very lights skinned. In fact, my son is darker skinned than his dad lol.

LOL  ya ya I Know the term comes from Hispanola... but whenever I hear the term, I think what are they, Hysterical Spanierds?   Hispanics! hahahahah okay forgive me...

I fully realize that "Mexican" means person from Mexico.. person who was BORN there, just like American means anyone born here, every race...

Mexicans can be of Mayan descent,  the indigenous people, from their various areas... and people of Spanish descent who settled there- and now people of any descent who settled there..   I know spain had people of all skin tones- heck they were once taken over by Muslims of north Africa so plenty of darker skinned people from Spain too, along with light..

Anyway- Puerto Ricans are mostly spanish/black mix.  So lots of darker skinned folk in Puerto Rico....

I read that the Spanish people were very proud of being "Blue Bloods"- light skinned- the blue veins showed... to show their bloodlines had not been tainted by mixing with the Moorish conquerors!  So there are a lot of light-skinned Spanierds!

Lol Right! He's used Chicano. He is a mutt....or Heinz57. lol I always liked that term. I'm the same. I'm not all of one thing. I've got German, Dutch, and Native American along with whatever my dad is (don't know the guy so don't know).

If your husband is half and was born here, he would be a Chicano. Or a mutt.. Lol I'm joking

    Quoting Luna091306:

So Mexicans would be Hispanic then? Lol I'm so confused. I never know which is right which is why I put Hispanic in quotations in my last reply. My dh is half Mexican and he has used the term Hispanic to describe himself before.

    Quoting momsince04:

Actually Hispanic is the wrong term for ricans. Ricans, and people of south america are considered Latinos. Hispanic is for spanish speaking people of the americas whose first language was Spanish and colonized by spain. Hispanic is a term that I believe Nixon adopted, in 1980 to pretty much sum us all up.
