Well ds's spelling test is as follows:
Circle the correct spelling of the word.
That's it. They have all the words on a paper with a bunch of other misspelled words and they had to choose the rightly spelled one.
Of course, he got them all right. But how in the world is THAT a spelling test?

i didn't do it that way either but i don't know it's necessarily a bad way.. ?

It's more of a realistic way to do it. You realize a word is spelled wrong by how it looks. Not memorizing the spelling of millions of words.
In kinergarten we do it the old fashioned way because most of our words are spelled phonetically correct. However I have seen many of the upper grades do it the way you say your DD's teacher does it.

omg. that sounds crazy. That's called memorization... not knowing how to spell.

It's called multiple choice. lol

It is how some teachers get them used to spelling tests. They have to pick the one that is spelled correctly. Most times as the year goes on, it changes to the regular spelling tests. On state testing they have to bubble in correct word, it isn't much different.
My 1st grader has the traditional spelling tests. It helps them learn it a lot better if they do it different ways.

I agree that it doesn't seem as effective. Just to be sure that he is getting the most practice and learning as much as possible, why don't you make it a point to study his spelling words with him by giving him your own version of a spelling test? That way, he benefits from both methods.
