Mom to Mom
Welcome to Mom To Mom's Tuesday Coffee Break!
A few days ago, the hacktivist group known as Anonymous targeted the Westboro Baptist Church after WBC released plans to picket at the vigil for the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. Anonymous took down the WBC's website and posted the phone numbers, email and home addresses of church members online. Anonymous has previously targeted the NATO and Church of Scientology websites along with many more.

Considering what type of "church" they are, I highly doubt its a basic church website that is easy to hack.
Quoting Knightquester:
- Have you ever heard of the hacktivist group known as Anonymous? No, never heard of them before.
- How do you feel about their ability to infiltrate websites and create havoc? Rather admirable since some sites are harder to hack than others, however a basic church website should be pretty easy.
- Do you agree with their methods or do you think they are going too far? I don't disagree or agree, given it has nothing to do with me personally.
- How would you describe them? Hacktivists? Vigilantes? Criminals? Heroes? None of the above; they're hackers. Hackers always hack for a purpose regardless if the masses agree or not.

Yes, and I'm aware that members often break off into different hacktivist groups whose methods and reasoning don't always match Anonymous. - How do you feel about their ability to infiltrate websites and create havoc?
They're not the only people who can hack networks and decrypt information. That they use it to protest is the same as someone being able to pick a lock and set animals free from a research facility, really. - Do you agree with their methods or do you think they are going too far?
I'm up in the air about them. Sometimes their methods and actions are useful (hacking and providing information to hidden databases of child pornography and those that use/provide it is a GREAT example). Sometimes they're harmful.
In the case of protesting WBC, I think it was admirable to take a stance, but that WBC has a habit of suing anyone that retaliates, it puts others at a potential risk should they take action with the information provided by Anonymous. - How would you describe them? Hacktivists? Vigilantes? Criminals? Heroes?
They're definitely hactivists and vigilantes. Criminals or heroes? It depends on what they're doing at the time. I certainly wouldn't call them criminals for helping track down solid evidence regarding child exploitation and sexual abuse. But I would for things like finding sensitive customer information and exposing it for anyone to exploit (I'd reference Sony, but that was a hacktivist group that split from Anonymous)
