We do homework before fun after school. Any deviation and the next morning it's "Mom, I forgot to do my homework."

well my son is not in school yet but once he is i will do homework first then play after

DD goes to an afterschool program at the school. They give them a snack and then they work on homework for half an hour. After that they get to play. Anything that doesn't get done in that time gets done while I am making dinner.

We always got 30 minutes to run around, get a snack, etc. Then we had to do homework, and chores. And then we were free to do whatever we wanted.
