"Do you know where your child is going online?" -- OT
November 20, 2013 at 3:47 PM

I know most of us more than likely keep track of our children's online activities.  This really opened my eyes to how these kinds of searches can affect pre-teens and young adults.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2135203/Jamie-13-kissed-girl-But-hes-Sex-Offender-Register-online-porn-warped-mind-.html

The title is : Jamie is 13 and hasn't even kissed a girl. But he's now on the Sex Offender Register after online porn warped his mind...

My kids aren't old enough to use YouTube without help yet, but they're the same way with tv shows. I hope they come to me when they're unsure like yours go to you.

    Quoting usmom3:

I know what they are doing & where they are. One of the places they like to go is YouTube & even though I have all the filters on to block them from seeing things, they don't always work. They are very good about getting me when they find a video they want to watch but are not sure of it because it was posted by a channel or person they are not familiar with. In those instances I will watch the video first to see if it is OK for them to see. They are very good at coming to me when they are unsure if something is appropriate for them & will even go as far as to tell us when they are not ready to see a movie or read a book that we are talking about seeing or reading.

I think a lot of that is something we have to start teaching our kids. Real sex vs the sick fantasy world some pornography offers. I couldn't imagine being with someone who fantasized about some of the situations explained in that article. If your daughter grows up and understands love never means being man-handled by your lover hopefully she'll get away from any person like that before they have the chance to make a lasting impression on her.

    Quoting faire_jour:

I am terrified. Not for my own child (we work really hard on keeping her safe) viewing it, but because she will have to grow up and date, and eventually marry a man who might have seen these things.

I've never heard of that site. Is it like YouTube, or out is downloads?

I'm waaaaay over protective of my kids online. They aren't even allowed to go on regular you tube but have to go in ZuiTube instead. My major concerns are the kids downloading virus'

Yeah it can. Some of the things I've seen with the safe search on... I can never un-see. O.O I'm reconsidering what I thought was an appropriate age for a kid to have a private laptop.

Those are sad situations in that article.  We only let the girls play on their pc's in the family room, and use safesearch, etc.  Even so we're cautious since some of the weirdest stuff can still get through.

No kidding!  Once at work we were working on a poster and typed in kiss.   We had a 'no adult content' block that was supposed to be on there but holy cow!  I shut it down quickly so I didn't get the unintended boot!

Yes, I agree. I talk to my kids about the same thing, although right now it's more about tv shows than internet sites. You really have to work to keep that line of communication open with your kids.

    Quoting Knightquester:

Oh wow, that is just sad and scary at the same time.

Yes, I'm fortunate enough to know where my children go on the internet.  They talk to me and their computers are in the same room I am where I can walk up to it and view it as I please.  We've talked of the dangers of the internet and why there are restrictions out there.  We've also talked about inappropriate images and videos that are easily accessible but unacceptable to view.

I think more now days than in previous generations parents need to be more proactive and involved in their children's lives in order to ensure that they make safe and wise decisions for their future.  There are just too many more ways to screw up or get ideas on how to screw up now with technology as it is, than there were in past generations prior to television, computers, cell phones and even cars.

Wow, it's amazing something like 'kiss' could bring up content like that!

No kidding!  We were just making a poster for a wedding shower (during lunchtime of course) and were looking for doves, kittens, etc.  We certainly didn't expect what popped up!

There is a lot of stuff I have seen go wrong with kids AND adults spending too much time online...

Zuitube is essentially a kids version of YouTube. It weeds out the really inappropriate videos based on the tags - like when you upload a video on YouTube you would tag it as funny, joke, music, etc, those with adult content are blocked in Zuitube.
