SOTW and H.O. comparisons

I don't know if anyone will be interested in this. This was something I posted in another group to show the comparisons. Thought I would post it here too. 

It is Lesson 1 and 3 of Ancient history by Pandia Press - level 1

and lessons 1 and 5 of Story Of The World - volume 1 - Ancient history.

Some lessons are in the comments section.

This is straight from their guides. To show the differences between these two curriculums.

I believe both are for grades k-4

Prep for Lesson 1

copy pages 3,5,7,8,9,11,13,15,16 in your Evan Moor History Pockets book. 

Main Lesson

Complete pocket 1 "What is history" in your pocket book. Place in notebook (binder) when complete.

Read SOTW Introduction "How do we know what happened?"

Use a childrens dictionary and help child look up and define "archaeology". Place this copy work in the notebook.

Draw and color a picture about what was read in this lesson. Hints: tree ring, archaeologist digging up bones, family tree.

Look at the UILE 

Internet: Go to the UILE website, type in the page number that corresponds with the daily lessons, and browse the related websites.

Review Questions - What is history?

What do we call someone who reads letters, journals and monuments to find out about the past? (A historian)

What do we call the story that historians write about the past? (history)

Narration Exercise - What is history?

Ask the child to tell you in his own words about two ways that historians learn about the past. Acceptable narrations might include, "Historians read letters and look at monuments", or "People wrote letter and kings told people to write down stories. Historians can read them."

Review Question - What is Archaeology?

What do Archaeologists do? (dig objects out of the ground and learn about them)

What kinds of things did people leave behind them, in the story we read? (dishes, tools, toys)

Narration Exercise - What is Archaeology?

Ask the child to tell you in his own words abou the kinds of things that Archaeologists dig out of the ground. An acceptable narration might be, "Archaeologists dig things like dishes and toys out of the ground." You can prompt the child to add, "They find out about the past from these things".

Activity Projects

1) writing / craft project: Make a history of my family book

print student pages 1-2 (cover page of family book and family history page)

interview family members 

color and add pictures

hole punch and add brass fastners

2) A dirty dig (a simulated archaeology dig)

assemble together a pile of items that answers these questions:

what did these people eat

what kind of transportation did they have 

what kind of houses did they live in

what did they do for entertainment

did they read and write

bury the list of above artifacts and have the kids dig them up

    Unless you plan on doing an entire lesson in one day, you would need to schedule out which of these things listed under each lesson, would get done each day. You would have to figure out how many days a week you want to do History. 

    There are 36 lessons with History Odyssey and 42 "lessons" for Story Of The World. 

    I plan on doing history every day of the week (4days). I plan on getting 1 - 2 lessons done a week.

    I have to plan my lessons a few weeks in advance to try ordering the recommended reading list of books from the library / Amazon.

    I try to see if there is any other resources to refer to online (pinterest, youtube, lesson pathways, google search...), Netflix, or around the house.

    History Odyssey

    Lesson 3 - The Sumerians

    Main Lesson part 1: Sumer, The first civilization

    Read UILE 110-111 (discuss pictures as you read encyclopedia)

    SOTW chapter 5 - the first sumerian dictator

    CHOW chapter 5 - real history begins

    Help your child look up and define cuneiform and mesopotamia. Be sure to place this copy work in your childs notebook (binder).

    Find modern - day Iraq on a globe or map. Point out the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. 

    On map 1 again, see if your child remembers and can point out the the bodies of water (Mediterranean sea, red sea, caspian sea, persian gulf). Have your child label the city - state of sumer with a dot (this is the proper way to label a city on a map). See UILE page 110 for assistance with labeling. 

    Complete pocket 2 "ancient mesopotamia" Place in binder when done.

    complete the project "model ziggurat" on page 89 in "ancient egyptians and their neighbors" book.

    Main Lesson part 2: Daily Life of the Sumerians 

    read uile pages 112 - 113

    use a childrens dictionary and help your child look up and define  "sculpting". Place copy work in binder. 

    choose from the following projects in ancient egyptians and their neighbors: long robe, queens headdress, weaving on a hanging loom, math sumerian style, sebetu rolls

    draw and color a picture about what was read in this lesson. Hints: ziggurats, a house of dried mud bricks, people making pottery, or a city with a ziggurat in the center.

    By lesson 4, they start learning some neat rhymes and by lesson 5, they are using the dover coloring books.

    The corresponding SOTW lesson to the above History Odyssey lesson, is chapter / lesson 5. 

    SOTW's lay out never changes. 

    So there are the 4 encyclopedia cross references to do.

    Then the review questions: "The first Sumerian Dictator" - based on what was read. Example: "Do you remember what Mesopotamia means? (between the rivers). There are a total of 7 questions to ask. 

    Then the narration exercise: "The first Sumerian Dictator" -- The child should have said: "The cities in Sumer all fought with each other. Sargon conquered them all. He made one empire out of them".

    Map Work: student pages 13 - 

    1) The area Sumerians lived was called Sumer. Sumer was not one country, like Egypt, but was made of many city - states. Fund Sumer on map and underline it. 

    2) One story tells us that when Sargon was a baby, he floated down the Euphrates river in a basket. Find and trace the Tigris and Euphrates River in blue.

    3) Sargon was found at the edge of a river in the city of - state called Kish. Sargon was raised in Kish, and became a servant of the king. Find Kish and underline it.

    4) Sargon conquered all of Mesopotamia and called his new empire Akkadia. Draw a line through the word Mesopotamia, and write Akkadia to show Sargons new empire.

    Are these your plans? Are you doing both curriculums or one of them? We are doing SOTW, but I have so much planning to do still! I found some great resources I can share when I am not mobile if you are interested (a Netflix movie list to go along with it, and a lesson planning outline)

    MFW also uses SOTW as part of some of their history.

    I did look into MFW. However, I refuse to use a curriculum that uses missionary books as part of "world history". It raises red flags for me personally.

     I understand. I have never used it. Since you were compairing curriculum that used SOTW as a spine, I thought you might like to know there was more out there than what you listed.

    I think Bibloplan also uses SOTW. And I personally know a family that combibes MOH and SOTW and they love it.

    Honestly? I never used any encyclopedias for the activities for SOTW
