My son can write his letters and shapes, but it takes forever because he is constantly adjusting his pencil. Ill put his fingers on it correctly and then he moves them every.single.time because he says its funny feeling. What are we doing wrong here?

Try golf pencils. Or shortened pencils.

You could just let him hold it he way it feel right to him & as he grows he will adjust it to the most efficient way for him to use it.

I would hold a little while.  Maybe use a dry erase board and markers.   Paint and paint brushes may even work better for awhile.  Something fun and easy for him to use.  How old is he?

Someone on here told me to take a tissue, tear it in half, fold it up and have my lo hold that in the pinky and ring finger while holding his pencil.  Suddenly he started holding it right.  It was awesome and amazing.  Try it.

My 4 yo holds hers very strangely.  It works for her.  It isn't "the normal" method, but it works for her.

Thanks for the ideas everyone, we will try them. He is about to turn 4. We normally use a chalkboard , but I feel like he should be able to write with a pencil too. Is this something that he will get on his own eventually?

If you go on Pinterest, there is a diy of a sock monster with holes for the fingers that teaches the child to hold the pencil correctly.

Yes! He is really young to worry about it, honestly. 8)

He's only 3?  Relax!  Using crayons and chalk is definately enough for now.  He really doesn't have the fine motor skills for using a skinny pencil yet.  We had triangular pencils for our oldest when he was younger.  I think they were called Yikes! and they helped, but really, hold off a bit.
