so overwhelmed
February 4 at 8:32 PM

Long story short, we've decided to home school our 6 year old son for the 2nd half of kindergarten, and then try sending him back to PS for 1st grade. I've been using Time4Learning and a workbook but I feel like none of it is new to him, nothing is challenging (one reason we didn't bother with PS after moving). Are there any 1/2 year curriculums or is that crazy? Or maybe an advanced kinder/slower 1st grade one? I really don't feel like I can do this without much more guidance, we've been slacking majorly and we can't continue this.

And a long shot, but if anyone is in the Waco, Texas area, please let me know! I'm going crazy here! lol

Welcome to the group. I don't know much about curriculum because we don't use it. This link should help you figure out what you need to work on with him.

Why don't you bump him up a grade in T4L, since you don't feel he is being challenged? When you use T4L, you get the grade below and the grade above the one that you signed up for.

averagemoma069, you are not tied to curriculum.  When you home school, the whole world is your classroom.  You can supplement, or create your own curriculum.  Following are some  article that should be helpful:

I would just buy him the next grade level up in his work. You might run into an issue if the school he is going into is behind him. Homeschooled kids tend to out pace their peers really quickly. Many times there are issues getting them settled back into school, especially in the lower grades.

Look into a public cyber charter school we do Georgia cyber academy they use the k12 curriculum and its still homeschool but you have a teacher to help you, they provide the curriculum free, books workbooks everything ! They will test and he can go ahead to where he needs to be.

I forgot I could bump him up a level in T4L. I'll do that. I had hoped it would catch up to him but it doesn't seem to have adjusted. I also got a couple of new workbooks (K and 1st) and the 1st set of BOB books. I have Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons that I need to start using as well.

I really have no idea what kind of learner he is. That sounds awful. :/

I don't think we can sign up for a K12 program now. I have a couple of friends who are using it but they started at the beginning of the year. I wanted to also but it wouldn't have worked with us moving from NC to TX in November.

I feel like I'm not creative enough or disciplined enough to do this. :/

I agree with deb, sounds like you are doing a good job! I'm not creative either, so don't sweat that. Don't worry, you will find your groove. Home Learning Year by Year (Rebecca Rupp) is an excellent resource giving great guidelines for each grade. There are also the What Your (example) First Grader Needs to Know (E.D. Hirsch, Jr.) books. They go up to 6th grade. You will do great!
