I am curious if you use tests to gauge how your kids grasp the knowledge or do you use your own berating and judgement? If you test, what type of test do you use? Online or paper or verbal?

Yes, I give them written tests.

Yes, we do written tests at the end of each unit and "quizzes" every Friday. This is more for my own benefit than his becomes it helps me gauge whether we are ready to move on or need more practice. However, my "quizzes" are more of a review than an actual quiz.. We use the chalkboard and interactive type questioning.

Sometimes I do.  They do state testing every year, and they do periodic testing in certain subjects.  I test if I feel that they may have gaps in their memory or not be retaining things, or when they have taken a large break from school (like this past Christmas break).

Our only written test is our CAT test each year.  Everything else is mostly verbal.  I know by working with them what they know and don't know.   Their CAT test has always coincided with where I know they were at.
