We have hardwood--our house is 95 years old--with area rugs in most rooms.  The kitchen and bathroom have vinyl tile, utility room has red and white tile from the 50's, soon to be replaced.

Sounds a lot like my house with the exception of the tile from the 50's. Our house was built in 1900. Kitchen and bathroom are vinyl tile, and the rest of the house is hardwood. We too have area rugs throughout.
