bottom, my mom says when i was a kid i learned to open a banana that way from watching a nature documentary on chimps. never remembering opening one from the top

Both. Depends on if I want to pick at the bottom, or say screw it and do it from the stem.

I open from the Stem...another thought...when I operated my in-home daycare I had to take several training courses...They taught us to remove the entire peeling before giving the banana to children...the peeling is covered in germs from being handled so much by various workers and etc.
